A journey through Sardinia\u2019s geological and industrial history. The history of the Rosas Mine began over 500 million years ago, during the Paleozoic Era, when the first mineral veins\u2014such as galena and blende\u2014formed deep within the Earth\u2019s crust. With the Hercynian orogeny, about 200 million years later, massive tectonic movements caused granitic magma to rise, transforming and fracturing the pre-existing rocks. It was within these fractures that the rich mineralized veins that made Rosas famous were formed. <\/p>

The site\u2019s modern history began in 1832, when Enzo Perpignano, an entrepreneur from Iglesias, discovered the deposit. The official mining concession was granted in 1851, marking the start of lead and zinc mining. Over the decades, the site became a vital hub for the Sardinian mining industry, with a workers\u2019 village built between 1887 and 1908 to house miners and their families. <\/p>

Today, the Rosas Mine preserves the memory of the past through an immersive museum experience, restored facilities, and activities that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the mining life of the 19th and 20th centuries.<\/p>

What to see at the Rosas Mine<\/h3>

1. The Mining Village<\/h4>

The village, built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, represents the social heart of the mine. This is where the miners\u2019 homes were built\u2014simple and functional structures constructed with local materials such as schist stone and lime. Each house had two main rooms: the kitchen and a bedroom. These homes, now restored, offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the families who worked and lived in Rosas. Some of the village\u2019s buildings have been converted into lodging facilities, offering visitors the chance to stay in an authentic setting, immersed in history and nature. <\/p>

2. Santa Barbara Gallery<\/h4>

A fascinating tour that allows you to explore about 200 meters of one of the mining complex\u2019s main tunnels. Here, you can observe the various excavation techniques used over the decades, from chestnut wood supports to the use of explosives and drilling machines. The tour offers a unique glimpse into the hard work of the miners, highlighting the ingenuity and effort required to extract minerals from the rock. <\/p>

3. The Laundromat<\/h4>

The ore processing plant was the hub of mining operations, the place where the extracted ore was crushed, washed, and prepared for shipment. Built in 1882 and expanded over the years, it features an imposing structure with schist walls, cast-iron pillars, and a roof made of wood and corrugated metal. Thanks to a careful restoration, the original machinery has been returned to working order, offering visitors a realistic glimpse into the ore processing process. <\/p>

4. Calcination Furnace<\/h4>

This imposing truncated-conical kiln, built of schist stone, was used to process zinc ore and lime. Inside the combustion chamber, materials such as wood and ore were layered alternately to achieve optimal calcination. Today, the kiln stands as a unique testament to the mining engineering of that era. <\/p>

5. Historic buildings: guesthouse, school, and chapel<\/h4>

At the highest point of the site are buildings intended for the community, such as the dormitory for unmarried workers, the elementary school, and a small chapel. These buildings, constructed with simple materials but seamlessly integrated into the landscape, reflect the social aspect of life in the mining village. <\/p>

6. Explosives Depot and Storage Facility<\/h4>

On the way to the tunnel, you can visit the explosives depot, a small building designed with safety in mind. Not far away, the storage warehouse still bears traces of the operations involved in weighing and transporting the processed ore. <\/p>

7. Laboratories and Off-Site Oil Mill<\/h4>

The workshops housed crucial operations such as the carpentry shop, the forge, and the compressor room. The outdoor crusher, installed in 1962, was used for the primary crushing of the ore, a fundamental step in the processing. <\/p>
