Geo-Mineralogical and Historical Museum
The Geo-Mineralogical and Historical Museum of the Mining Village of Rosas was officially established on August 1, 2016. Retrieved from the lower part of the old Laveria plant, today, after careful reconversion, it houses mineralogical collections belonging to the local, regional, national, and world territory. The collection and classification of minerals starts, precisely, from the raw material, represented by lead-zinciferous and mixed-sulfide lode fragments, from which lead, zinc and copper were extracted. In the exhibit are a number of secondary minerals also grown for the extraction of various metals. Of notable historical importance is Rosasite, zinc-copper hydroxycarbonate, first discovered in the world in the Rosas Mine in 1908 by geologist Domenico Lovisato. The museum illustrates, through a series of panels accompanied by a wealth of images and text, the history of the mine, technology, village life, and the social and urban evolution of downtown Narcao. The exhibit includes a number of drilling machines dating from the early 1920s and 1950s; laboratory instruments used for mineralogical analysis; an interactive exhibit through which to learn about the processes of mining and mineral processing; and typewriters and paraphernalia from the old post office institutionalized in the mining village of Rosas between the 19th and 20th centuries.
